Just then, the siren went off. For Monticello-ites, we usually know it\u2019s not a fire. It blasts three times a day, but every time I hear it now, I think of Gene Schafer. Once, just after I moved to town, I was at Gene\u2019s shop and, when the siren sounded, I said, \u201cIt must be <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1449086997\"><span class=\"aQJ\">six o\u2019clock<\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gene snorted, \u201cHell, Stiles. That ain\u2019t what those sirens are. You think it means <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1449086998\"><span class=\"aQJ\">8 AM<\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1449086999\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Noon and 6 PM<\/span><\/span>, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d I replied. \u201cWhat else could it mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cFirst siren, time to get up, second siren, time for lunch. Third siren?
