The Consciousness of Willows\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sometimes when I sit quiet by the river
\nI can hear them among the dizzy buzz
\nOf insects, the white noise of flowing water,<\/p>\n

Not songs exactly, unvoiced thoughts,
\nOf greenness reaching towards the sun,<\/p>\n

For roiling water of spring floods,
\nThe thrash of rushing waves washing into
\nEddylines writhing with debris and driftwood,<\/p>\n

For graceful bending, roots in damp sand
\nSinking intentions deep to hold on tight;
\nThey reach up to beckon songbirds<\/p>\n

Invited to perch on swaying branches,
\nIn return for keeping down the pests,
\nThey contemplate the reedy heron who fishes<\/p>\n

In calm still water slenderly disguised
\nBy its supple willow-like neck
\nUntil it rises on startled wings, unmoored,<\/p>\n

Without disappointment, joy or sadness
\nThey hold fast to water, Earth and sky
\nThough they acknowledge nothing but willowness.<\/p>\n
