April 19, 1979:
As it was, before inundation.
April 19, 1987:
No progress in down cutting after 4 years due to continued high water in the reservoir. The water seen here is the river flowing over reservior mudflat, not the reservoir itself. At the time the reservoir was about 18 feet below full pool.
April 11, 1995:
Substantial down cutting has occurred, most of it in the spring of 1993, leaving possibly only a couple of feet to go. Notice reappearance of undercut in rock on left as entrance. The mudflat here has since built back up again due to high reservoir levels, and as of May 1999 was almost as high as it was in 1987.

April 23, 1984:
West wall of Escalante River canyon just above Coyote Gulch, after 1983 inundation.
May 8, 1999:
Same as photo on the left, but after 15 years of recovery. The bathtub ring is mostly gone and the wall striping is starting to redevelope. Note the horizontal lines left by sediment layers. Similar lines are left by naturally occuring sediment deposits washing out. The mudflat had been cut down by substantially here when the reservoir was low.

As it was, before inundation
July 3, 1987:
After the disastrous overfilling of the reservoir in 1983. Fllods have rearranged things here, and then steady stream flows have deposited an even layer of sand over everything. One of the rangers working in the Escalante in 1983 reported seeing a houseboat tied up in the background while the reservoir was backed up to here, where it was never supposed to have been.
May 6, 1997:
Following the heavy runoff down the Escalante n the spring of 1993 and the resultant down cutting of the river mudflat Coyote was able to begin flushing itself out. By this time, 4 years later, it was beginning to look like it ought to, with only about 1 or 2 feet left to go.

March 18, 1983:
Glen Canyon Reservoir at begining of narrows in 50 Mile Gulch, looking downstream. Reservoir down 16.51 feet.
March 3, 1992:
Same as photo to the left, reservoir down 80 feet, taken from a remnant of mudflat, visible at lower right corner. This narrows had ben filled in completely with mud, apparently to about the level where the dog is standing on the bench at left, but in a very short time has been flushed out almost completely, except for some that undoubtedly remains in the bottom.
