Frank Silvey's Journals...
EDITOR'S NOTE:
A couple years ago, Zephyr reader Vennie White sent me these journals, thinking we might be able to put them to good use. Finally, I've started transcribing them. Moab Life has certainly come a long way (for better or worse) since 1938.
As to Frank, Moab's Times-Independent publisher Sam Taylor had this to say about Frank:
A Special note of thanks to VENNIE WHITE
WHO MADE THIS JOURNAL AVAILABLE TO THE ZEPHYR
The pioneer Silvey family settled in the La Sal area in the early 1800s. Selecting what looked to be good farm land, they staked it out and made a five-day horseback trip to Bluff City to formally file papers on it.
Frank Silvey, one of the sons, was a good friend of my dad, and an amateur historian. He was a prolific writer, and dad published a lot of his writings in The Times-Independent. When Frank, who lived with Jack and Mary Pogue in Moab much of the last part of his life, died he left a trunk full of his writings at their home when he passed away.

Here is part of what Frank left in that trunk... JS
We are broke down again with a bit in the hub and other mishaps. Pitt states he will pull caseing and plug hub, so I do not expect my job as watchman to last much longer...
November 19th 1938
Weather clear and cold for November as last week Thursday registered 8 degrees above, colder than any time last winter. This was the coldest election date that I can remember experiencing in a low country.
Monday 21st Blanche M invited me to dinner Thanksgiving day (24th). Visited Emma Shafer and her daughter. Poor Emma is very sick and perhaps is not long for this world.
Tuesday November 1st 1938
Went to town with the mail. Signed papers for lease of my mining claims in Lisbon Valley with Long and associates. They paid me $100.00 down and are to pay $100.00 Dec. 1st. Gave them a bond and lease for two years. I am to receive $25 royalty on all ore sold to smelter.
Wed Nov 23rd 11:10 a.m.
I hear Emma is very sick and not expected to live only a short time. Poor Emma. Would like to help her but she is more than likely beyond human help. Still clear and cold with N Westerly wind. Moab primary children called on me, gave me a nice Thanksgiving greeting basket filled with goodies and sang me a song. I sure appreciated this and it shows we still have brotherly love on some parts of the earth at least.
Just heard that Emma died at 6:30 a.m. Funeral at 2 p.m. Friday the 25th.
Price of mines $6500.00. Royalty to apply on purchase price.
Thursday Nov 24th
Had Thanksgiving dinner at Blanche's (Moab Garage Car Auto Park) and had a nice dinner. We all have much to be thankful for. Visited Frita and she gave me a nice heavy overcoat, almost new, that they had no particular use for. I certainly appreciated this gift.
Friday 25th
Went to Emma's funeral. Many nice flowers and a good sized crowd in attendance. I feel that she is not really dead, but her spirit at this moment is alive and happy. Clear and very cold last night for November.
Sunday November 27th.
Went to the Mormon church and heard a very good sermon by one of the Salt Lake City "apostles."
The Old Colorado River Bridge in the 1930s.
