I had been alone in the hills so much, that watching these people joking and teasing each other, and laughing together was very fascinating to me. Felix could sure mix in with Pete and Lynn, even though he was much younger. Dad was enjoying himself.
Pete and Felix got together whenever they had a chance because they both liked to ride horses and if one bucked, that was fun too.
Pete had a horse that did tricks. She did not look like much, but if he told her she was dead she would lie down, stretch out and close her eyes. When he told her she was lazy she got up. When he whistled a certain tune she danced. He got on her and whirled a rope around her. She walked or trotted through the loop. She had many other tricks he had taught her. He really had a way with animals.

BUT HERE’S WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING…
Among the co-plaintifs in this case was the “Utility Air Regulatory Group.” One of its members is Luminant Energy in Texas, a part of Energy Future Holdings (formerly TXU) acquired by TPG Capital in 2007. TPG’s founding partner is billionaire venture capitalist/environmental benefactor and Grand Canyon Trust board member, DAVID BONDERMAN.
So again…how should enviros respond?…should they be depressed that efforts by the EPA to clean up the air have been thwarted by a conservative Supreme Court? Or should they be relieved that their venture capitalist benefactor won his battle? After all, increased costs for improved environmental air quality could hurt Bonderman’s bottom line, and…INCREDIBLY…mainstream environmental groups as well.
How’s that for irony?
Here, in part, is what Luminant had to say about the case that was just decided in their favor:
“The Environmental Protection Agency’s (“EPA”) proposed Clean Power Plan does not reflect the reality of electricity generation and supply. The proposals EPA has put forward—which it claims will reduce greenhouse gas emissions—are unlawful and simply unworkable in light of the reality in which electricity is generated, distributed, and utilized. The proposals do not balance the economy, energy security, reliability, and the environment. The proposals also have numerous legal and technical failings, as detailed in these comments….A power plan that works for Texas, and the nation, would look very different than EPA’s proposal.
“A workable power plan would recognize that greenhouse gas emissions are a global issue that requires a global solution and would not burden the U.S. economy with massive new and incremental costs that are not demonstrated to have any measureable benefit to global greenhouse gas levels or climate change.
“EPA’s plan is not a workable plan. It is contrary to the legal mandates of the Clean Air Act and disregards the states’ primary authority and expertise over these matters. It will fundamentally disrupt the nation’s energy markets without realizing any meaningful environmental benefit to global carbon dioxide levels, which makes EPA’s plan bad public policy that will have severe negative economic and social consequences.”

On June 30, two astronomical objects are destined to meet: The planet named after the Goddess of love, Venus, and the planet named after the God of Thunder, Jupiter. On Earth, they will appear so close together that they will look like a dramatic “double star.”
These two planets have been gradually approaching each other for the last few weeks, creeping toward their closest point: 1/3° apart. That’s close enough to be able to cover them with the tip of your pinky finger with an outstretched arm. In reality, they will be around 670 million kilometers (416 million miles) apart in space.

But on one night in 1963 as I camped on the river sands at the mouth of the Escalante River, I concluded that I needed to continue to be close to the land I treasured in spite of the dam. But how? And suddenly it came to me. What a great thought! Why didn’t I think of it sooner! During that entire trip, the thought developed and expanded. It was this: I’d move my family and myself to one of the most out-of-the-way spots in Utah. I returned home and told my wife Marilyn that we were moving to Escalante!

The old resort town of Guerneville lies along the river in the heart of the coast range. The climate here is cool and wet: along with the ground fog, over 50 inches of annual rainfall patters the area, with some winter mornings dipping below freezing. Just enough freezing it seems to take palm trees out of the mix, leaving an ideal habitat for gigantic conifers to evolve and thrive. And so they have.
That is why after refreshing ourselves with state of the art cups of joe at the Coffee Bazaar in Guerneville Gail and I drove northward a few miles to the Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve Area and walked on a trail through the Redwoods.
They are the tallest trees in the world and some have been known to live over 2,000 years. It takes 400-500 years for them to reach maturity but when they do their small-spiked needles rise above all others, absorbing pure sunlight.

Hundreds of millions of people around the world depend on the use of underground rock formations known as aquifers to get the clean water they need. But a pair of new studies show many of the largest aquifers are being depleted at alarming rates.
As seen on this map, of the 37 largest ones in the world, 21 are losing more water than is being replaced, with those areas in orange and red showing much more serious problems with depletion. These are located in countries like China, Russia and Australia, as well as India, where water resources are already a major problem.
