(From the April/May Zephyr) SOLITUDE LOST…OR UNWANTED? Part 2…by Jim Stiles

Excerpt:

Until recently, solitude was a cherished and valuable component in our lives that often proved to be more elusive than we wanted it to be.  In the fast-paced, frenetic world that most of us endure, the idea of escaping the madness, even the faint hope that we could get away and claim a few moments of peace and quiet for ourselves, was comforting. We wanted to ‘disconnect,’ even if it was for just a few days. As we’ve noted before,  the opportunity for ‘solitude’ was even written into the Wilderness Act. It was a crucial component of the legislation.

But do most of us still seek that? Do we want to ‘disconnect?’ Would we really want to, “walk forever, just to find a telephone?”  Maybe not…

Ray Garner’s “The Desert”

NOTE: The Zephyr recently received a DVD of a 1949 documentary film by Ray Garner. The film is silent; Mr. Garner exhibited this film to audiences around the country and provided ‘live’ narration. The film is now in the public domain and I’m happy to present some still images from the film.
In this issue–images of downtown Moab in 1949 & camping out at the Devils Garden at Arches National Monument….JS

(AP) Remote Utah Outpost Serves as Stand-In for Surface of Mars…

HANKSVILLE, Utah (AP) — Four people wearing space helmets and square backpacks emerge from a circular structure resembling a water tank and step onto a reddish, barren landscape…One hikes up a hill to take magnetic readings of the ground with a rectangular apparatus that looks like a large leveling tool. Another pushes a wheelbarrow equipped with sensors arrayed in a zig-zag pattern.

For a group of six Belgian college students, it’s just another simulated day on Mars.
