(April/May 2013) Losing Solitude: Who Are We? …by Martin Murie

Excerpt:

When Aldo Leopold saw fierce green fire in the eyes of the dying wolf his life was changing; years of living in wolf country were driving those moments, years of paying attention, taking the measure of mountains.

“I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes — something known only to her (the wolf) and to the mountain.” (1) Leopold goes on to “suspect” that a mountain fears its deer, just as deer fear wolves. This metaphor, wonderfully outrageous, using fear as the organiser, is then spelled out:

“The cowman who cleans his range of wolves does not realize that he is taking over the wolf’s job of trimming the herd to fit the range. He has not learned to think like a mountain.” Thoughts like these culminate in his famous rule:

“A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.”

(April/May 2013) 82 Days…Robert F. Kennedy’s Campaign for President March 16 to June 4, 1968

Excerpt:

Washington, D.C. March 16, 1968

“I am today announcing my candidacy for the presidency of the United States.
I do not run for the presidency merely to oppose any man but to propose new policies. I run because I am convinced that this country is on a perilous course and because I have such strong feelings about what must be done, and I feel that I’m obliged to do all that I can.
I run to seek new policies – policies to end the bloodshed in Vietnam and in our cities, policies to close the gaps that now exist between black and white, between rich and poor, between young and old, in this country and around the rest of the world.
I run for the presidency because I want the Democratic Party and the United States of America to stand for hope instead of despair, for reconciliation of men instead of the growing risk of world war.
I run because it is now unmistakably clear that we can change these disastrous, divisive policies only by changing the men who are now making them. For the reality of recent events in Vietnam has been glossed over with illusions…”

(DPC) ‘Wind Turbine Blade Throw Incident At Ocotillo Wind Project

On May 16th a 173 foot long wind turbine blade crashed to the ground at Pattern Energy’s $600 million Ocotillo Wind Project in the desert town of Ocotillo. The blade landed approximately 100 yards from the turbine, blocking a jeep trail on public BLM land.

In a press release Donna Tisdale stated, “This wholly avoidable public health and safety hazard occurred just one day after San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved the revised Wind Energy Ordinance & Boulevard Community Plan to remove community protections to allow 500 foot tall industrial wind turbines on private land in previously protected areas near homes, recreation areas, and sensitive wildlife—just like the BLM did for Pattern Energy’s Ocotillo Wind—despite pleas from adversely impacted community members over valid and justified safety concerns.”

WE NEED YOUR HELP— JOIN THE ZEPHYR BACKBONE

April 2013

THE ZEPHYR/PLANET EARTH EDITION……YEAR 25 soon
CRUNCH TIME AGAIN…We Need Your Help…NOW More Than Ever
Support The Zephyr for as little as TEN dollars…

Hello,

We have begun Year 25 and still a persistently  independent print publication.  Nobody, including me, would have guessed The Zephyr would still be around after almost a quarter century. This year we’ve made some big changes to our web site that make it infinitely easier to read and we’ve added the Almost Daily Zblog,  (http://www.canyoncountryzephyr.com/blog/) with updates, images, news links and Zephyr stories from our archives.

If there is a drawback to the internet, it’s the fact that very few of us want to pay for the wealth of information that’s available. We’ve all grown accustomed to free access to whatever we want–news, information, music, films…it’s all there. But it’s not really free and we need the financial help of at least a few of you to stay afloat.  We’re not asking for much.

I am proud of this little cyber-rag and I believe The Zephyr is one of the last truly independent newspapers in the American West. We have struggled to be fair and evenhanded over the years, even when we paid dearly for our candor.  I hope you will see the value in that and become a member of The Zephyr Backbone. Thanks to all of you for your past support and encouragement….

Best wishes to all of you & THANKS for your past support…
Jim & Tonya

(Dec/Jan Z) ‘A Last Look at the “Pre-Elevated Bikeway RIVER ROAD” (State Route 128)…by Jim Stiles’

Construction on the $9 million Moab Hub & Elevated River Bikeway began last month.
Here are some photographs we shot of those first two miles as work began…A year or so from now, when this project is finished, we’ll give you Before & After views, so you can see the changes. Whether you like this project or you hate it, the river road is going to look different. The Elevated Bikeway will stop about a half mile from its intended end, for lack of funds. Proponents are still looking for another $2 million to extend the Bikeway to the mouth of Negro Bill Canyon. According to its fans, there are no current plans to extend the Elevated Bikeway further  up the river road….JS
