(from alternet) ‘Bill Moyers and Chris Hedges: How Whole Regions of America Have Been Destroyed in the Name of Quarterly Profits’

AN EXCERPT:   BILL MOYERS: Fit this all together for me. What does the suffering of the Native American on the Pine Ridge Reservation have to do with the unemployed coal miner in West Virginia have to do with the inner-city African American in Camden have to do with the single man working for minimum wage or less in Immokalee, Florida? What ties that all together?

CHRIS HEDGES: Greed. It’s greed over human life. And it’s the willingness on the part of people who seek personal enrichment to destroy other human beings. That’s a common thread. We, in that biblical term, we forgot our neighbor. And because we forgot our neighbor in Pine Ridge, because we forgot our neighbor in Camden, in Southern West Virginia, in the produce fields, these forces have now turned on us. They went first, and we’re next.

When Gas Stations Were Works of Art #1

When we first approached this abandoned filling station from the 1940s, the brick-work alone caught our attention…

Then we noticed this…

Who thought to build a trapezoidal gas station?

Looks like the bow of a brick ocean liner…

From a near abandoned town on the western Great Plains...ghosts are everywhere.

From HuffingtonPost) ‘Ozzie Zehner’s ‘Green Illusions’ Ruffles Feathers ‘

AN EXCERPT:    Alternative energy is not a free ride, just a different ride,” he added, “and there’s no reason to believe it will offset fossil fuel use in a society that has high levels of consumption and is growing exponentially.”

Put another way, renewable energy only makes sense if undertaken in concert with other, more fundamental changes in the way we deploy and make use of energy in our everyday lives. At the moment, we’re really paying attention to the technology end of things, Zehner argues, and without a holistic approach, these innovations get us nowhere.

AN EXCERPT:  The Grand Canyon as we know it may never be the same again. A proposed tourism destination called the Grand Canyon Escalade, which features a Gondola Tramway that will take tourists from the rim of the Canyon down to the Canyon floor, is currently in the works…Confluence Partners, LLC is the organization behind this massive project design. (from yahoo) ‘Sea Shepherd chief flees over Japan extradition fear’

AN EXCERPT:   Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson skipped bail and fled Germany over fears Japan would seek his extradition if he was sent to Costa Rica, the organisation suggested Thursday……..

Sea Shepherd is best known for its annual pursuit of the Japanese whaling fleet in Antarctica, using increasingly militant methods to halt the hunt, including the boarding of vessels…This year, after setting off from Australia, the group hurled stink bombs at the boats on the high seas and used ropes to try to tangle their propellers in a series of exchanges which saw the whalers retaliate with water cannon…The whaling fleet killed less than a third of the animals it planned to because of the sabotage attempts.

Fires and drought point to a new normal for the region

By William deBuys, TomDispatch

AN EXCERPT:    Dire fire conditions, like the inferno of heat, turbulence, and fuel that recently turned 346 homes in Colorado Springs to ash, are now common in the West. A lethal combination of drought, insect plagues, windstorms, and legions of dead, dying, or stressed-out trees constitute what some pundits are calling wildfire’s “perfect storm.”

They are only half right.

This summer’s conditions may indeed be perfect for fire in the Southwest and West, but if you think of it as a “storm,” perfect or otherwise — that is, sudden, violent, and temporary — then you don’t understand what’s happening in this country or on this planet. Look at those 346 burnt homes again, or at the High Park fire that ate 87,284 acres and 259 homes west of Fort Collins, or at the Whitewater Baldy Complex fire in New Mexico that began in mid-May, consumed almost 300,000 acres, and is still smoldering, and what you have is evidence of the new normal in the American West.
