(From HCN/Writers on the Range 2005) ‘Can Billionaire Philanthropy Save The Earth?’ — Gary Wockner

AN EXCERPT:    My personal opinion, I told my friend, is that its not environmentalism that’s dead, but rather labor and justice. There’s just no future in regular work; the future is in capital, connections to it, and then wielding that power eco-accordingly. I said point-blank: “Billionaire philanthropy is the only thing that can save the earth.”

And the argument makes sense. Our national and international economic systems increasingly support massive aggregations of wealth. And now, it is mainly by the benevolence of a small portion of all those millionaires and billionaires that most environmental foundations and organizations stay funded. Think Rockefeller, Hewlett, Ford, and of course, Ted Turner. And now, Wal-Mart.

(from ScientificAmerican) ‘Apocalypse Soon: Has Civilization Passed the Environmental Point of No Return?’

AN EXCERPT:  “… the latest global data are tracking one of the most alarming scenarios, in which these variables increase steadily to reach a peak and then suddenly drop in a process called collapse. In fact, “I see collapse happening already,” he says. “Food per capita is going down, energy is becoming more scarce, groundwater is being depleted.” Most worrisome, Randers notes, greenhouse gases are being emitted twice as fast as oceans and forests can absorb them. Whereas in 1972 humans were using 85 percent of the regenerative capacity of the biosphere to support economic activities such as growing food, producing goods and assimilating pollutants, the figure is now at 150 percent—and growing.”

(from the WashingtonPost) Book review: Michael Mann’s ‘The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars’

AN EXCERPT:  Much of the industrial and developing world accepts the scientific consensus that the burning of fossil fuels, and other activities that release heat-trapping greenhouse gases, contribute to climate change; on Friday, the International Energy Agency announced that global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning had reached a record high of 31.6 gigatons in 2011, up 3.2 percent from 2010.

(from the StarAdvertiser.com) ‘Arctic-sea oil exploration stands to open new frontier’

AN EXCERPT:  Barring a successful last-minute legal challenge by environmental groups, Shell will begin drilling test wells off the coast of northern Alaska in July, opening a new frontier in domestic oil exploration and accelerating a global rush to tap the untold resources beneath the frozen ocean. It is a moment of major promise and considerable danger….In blessing Shell’s move into the Arctic, Obama continues his efforts to balance business and environmental interests, seemingly project by project. He pleased environmentalists by delaying the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada and by adopting tough air standards for power plants, yet he has also delighted business concerns by rejecting an ozone standard deemed too costly to the economy….And now, the president is writing a new chapter in the nation’s unfolding energy transformation, in this case to the benefit of fossil fuel producers.

(from RollCall.com) ‘Obama Steers Clear on Climate’

AN EXCERPT:  President Barack Obama’s first Earth Day proclamation in 2009 was an urgent call to address global warming. This year? The word “climate” didn’t even get a mention…Gone are the urgent statements warning of melting glaciers and rising sea levels. Indeed, the energy and environment page at WhiteHouse.gov now shows a photo of the president walking in front of segments of oil pipeline, and the White House never neglects an opportunity to tout its support for domestic oil and natural gas drilling. In briefings on background, senior administration officials now talk about exporting fracking technology, which has caused natural gas production to boom and prices to fall.

(from BasinandRangeWatch.org) ‘Ocotillo Wind Project restraining order denied’

FROM ‘BASIN & RANGE WATCH:’

“We are sad to report that a Federal Judge has denied the Quechan restraining order to stop construction of the Ocotillo Express Wind Project. As we write this, sacred cultural sites are being bulldozed so Pattern Energy can complete enough construction by September to qualify for a 140 million dollar tax credit under the soon to expire federal Production Tax Credit program. Approval of this project is a very grim and insulting action by the Obama Administration. They can not be trusted.”

(from WashingtonExaminer) ‘EPA-NASCAR green deal covers everything–but racing!’

AN EXCERPT:   President Obama’s eco-friendly EPA inked a green partnership deal with high-octane NASCAR Monday to promote recycling and environmentally-friendly products to the sport’s millions of fans.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, NASCAR will encourage fans to buy “sustainable concessions” at races, expand the use of “safer chemical products,” conserve water, reduce waste, promote recycling, push products approved by the EPA that have a small enviro footprint and encourage suppliers to get an “E3 tuneup” aimed at promoting sustainable manufacturing.

Missing: any talk of greening races or race cars that consume about two million gallons of gas a year and average five miles per gallon.

(from USA Today) ‘Gridlock eases in many metro areas’

AN EXCERPT:  Traffic congestion dropped 30% last year from 2010 in the USA’s 100 largest metropolitan areas, driven largely by higher gas prices and a spotty economic recovery, according to a new study by a Washington-state firm that tracks traffic flows.

(from eastcountypost.org) ‘SILENCE OF THE LAMBS: U..S. GOVERNMENT AUTHORIZES KILLING OF ENDANGERED BIGHORNS IN PATH OF WIND PROJECT’

AN EXCERPT:   May 19, 2012 (Ocotillo) — In a precedent that has horrified wildlife experts, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has authorized the “take” (meaning harassment, displacement or even death) of 10 endangered Peninsular Bighorn Sheep – five ewes and five lambs.

The decision comes after federal wildlife officials were provided photographic evidence  that the endangered animals were seen in recent weeks on the site of the just-approved Ocotillo Express wind energy facility—a presence federal officials and the project developer have long denied.

Mark Jorgensen is the retired Superintendent of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, which shares a five mile border with the Ocotillo Express wind project now under construction on adjacent public property owned by the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM). He is horrified at the decision to allow the killing of the sheep on land that until recently was designated as critical bighorn habitat.

(from washingtontimes) ‘Drones over U.S. get OK by Congress’

AN EXCERPT:    Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It’s … a drone, and it’s watching you. That’s what privacy advocates fear from a bill Congress passed this week to make it easier for the government to fly unmanned spy planes in U.S. airspace.

The FAA Reauthorization Act, which President Obama is expected to sign, also orders the Federal Aviation Administration to develop regulations for the testing and licensing of commercial drones by 2015.
