HANK SCHMIDT'S Monthly Reports...
at ARCHES NATIONAL MONUMENT. 1939-1942
In October 1939, Hank Schmidt reported for duty as the first full-time "custodian" of Arches National Monument. In those quiet pre­war days, the Park Service was like an intimate family. His reports to Frank "Boss" Pinkley offered a personal look at life in SE Utah, almost three-quarters of a century ago.
For October 1939, Schmidt calculated visitation to the monument at 155, including "five parties that were out-of-state."
