‘JAMES WATT MEMORIAL the CARTOON’ from 1982 by Stiles

For those of you too young to remember, James Watt was Ronald Reagan’s controversial Interior Secretary in the 1980s. He was not exactly an advocate for the Great Outdoors. He once commented, “I don’t like to walk and I don’t like to paddle.”  He mocked affirmative action, saying in a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce about a coal-leasing panel: “I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple. And we have talent.”He subsequently resigned.  In 2008 TIME magazine named Watt the 6th worst cabinet member in American history.  This cartoon appeared in the ‘Earth First! Journal’ in 1982…JS
