AN EXCERPT: During a stop Thursday in Oklahoma, Obama announced the administration would “cut through the red tape” for the southern leg of the Keystone XL pipeline— disappointing environmentalists who had counted it a victory when the president denied a permit for the project’s full, Canada-to-Texas version.

THIS is what NASA climatologist JAMES HANSEN says about tar sands development:

“Exploitation of tar sands would make it implausible to stabilize climate and avoid disastrous global climate impacts…Phase out of emissions from coal is itself an enormous challenge. However, if the tar sands are thrown into the mix it is essentially game over.”
