(From the Dec/Jan Zephyr) More Poets, Fewer Lawyers…Poetry by Amy Brunvand

Western Tan

A brilliant yellow bird with a scarlet head,

A tanager, I mean, is sitting in the willows

Singing,

by the White River,

singing

It is neither white nor whitewater,

This muddy vein of life that flows placidly

Through the hollowed desert where energy

Comes straight from your college textbook

Burning,

gas and coal,

burning
