From the DEC/JAN Zephyr: Why I Never Became an Anti-Mormon…by Jim Stiles

An excerpt:

Utah is not like any other state. Some Americans are still not sure Utah is a part of the union, and in its early history, of course, the U.S. Government  refused to allow statehood for the land of Deseret. A “wicked place,” some self-righteous Christians complained.

Conversely, there are many Utahns who even today wish they’d stayed out of the USA in the first place. A few years ago, a friend of mine was chatting with a neighbor, a native born Blandingite, about the woes of the world. The man gazed east to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado and noted gravely, “Yeah, things are a mess out there in America.” For all these decades and years and centuries, Utahns and the rest of the country have maintained an uncertain truce.

From the DEC/JAN Zephyr: “Chasing the Uranium Dream–Moab in 1955, Remembered”…by Brett Huelen

An excerpt:

We moved to Moab in 1955–chasing the uranium dream with a brand new 1955 Dodge Power Wagon, pulling a 24′ Boles Aero travel trailer and a 1951 Willys CJ3 with a little military jeep trailer.  We initially prospected in the Circle Cliffs area where my Mother discovered a small deposit of carnitite.  She was using a Geiger Counter or scintillator and watched the needle practically bend in two when it pegged out!

From the DEC/JAN Zephyr: Sowing Clover: Snowfall and the Religion of Grief…by Tonya Stiles

An excerpt:

He was always teaching me about ritual, and about solitude. Each year, winter brought both to our isolated home in the forest. Mom and Dad brought in wood from the pile outside, to keep ready by the stove. We located the lamp oil and candles, and gathered them where they would be easily found in case of a power outage. With the coming of Advent, our weekly Mass took on an expectant solemnity, which impressed me even as a small child. The Advent readings hovered on the subject of preparation and readiness for the coming of God. We were in darkness, the Priest intoned from the altar, but soon there would be light.
