Moab Flashbacks #14: ‘MILT’S…& BEFORE DAVE’S’

The corner of 400 East & Mill Creek Drive looked a bit different in the early 70s when (we think) this picture was shot.  An empty lot occupied the space that would someday be filled by DAVE’S CORNER MARKET.  And before it became the Mayor’s HQ, the building was built originally to be a GO FER convenience store. But the business failed and it wasn’t until the mid-80s and Dave Sakrison came along that the business took off.

DRIVING CATTLE ALONG the RIVER ROAD, NEAR FISHER TOWERS…1973

This photograph was shot by BILL BENGE in 1973.  It’s along State Highway 128 (the river road), upriver from Moab. In this shot, the Fisher Towers are just out of view to the right.  I posted this image earlier today on facebook and we got this comment from CRICKET WHITE GREEN:  “WOW flash back! I am pretty sure that the brown and white pony was ours and his name was Patches and that the rider 3rd from the left maybe me on my horse Ginger! not sure I would have been 13 when this was taken!”

Note that 128 was still a dirt road then; it wasn’t completely paved until the late 80s.

(From the Zephyr archives) It’s the Aesthetics, Stupid (or is it?)…by Jim Stiles

An excerpt:

“Many years ago, during one of my first trips to the canyon country, I made the dusty drive to Grandview Point on the Island in the Sky. The road was still dirt and gravel then; hardly anybody made the trip. On Labor Day weekend I had the campground to myself.

From my vantage point, I could see much of the land that would be my home for the next 30 years. Some of those distant landmarks would become familiar to me. It’s a unique experience to stare at a hazy mountain peak, 75 miles away, and know exactly what it looks like to be on its summit staring back. Other places I’ve left alone, either because they’ve since become too crowded for me to tolerate, or else I never got around to getting there.

Knowing there are still unseen ‘gettin’ places’ to go to is comforting. Knowing they exist and that I don’t need to go to each of them to appreciate their beauty is comforting as well…”
