(from dailymail.co) ‘Is that really just a fly? Swarms of cyborg insect drones are the future of military surveillance’

AN EXCERPT:   The kinds of drones making the headlines daily are the heavily armed CIA and U.S. Army vehicles which routinely strike targets in Pakistan – killing terrorists and innocents alike….But the real high-tech story of surveillance drones is going on at a much smaller level, as tiny remote controlled vehicles based on insects are already likely being deployed….Over recent years a range of miniature drones, or micro air vehicles (MAVs), based on the same physics used by flying insects, have been presented to the public….The fear kicked off in 2007 when reports of bizarre flying objects hovering above anti-war protests sparked accusations that the U.S. government was accused of secretly developing robotic insect spies.

(from the 2009 archives) ‘HIS FINGER WAS ON THE RED BUTTON.’ —Michael Brohm

TO VISIT MICHAEL’S WEB SITE, CLICK THE IMAGE
I traveled for three days with a group of six retired Russian military officers. With great pride they sang songs about Fatherland Russia, hero jet fighter pilots and the softness of a mother’s love. They had never encountered an American and worked to show me both their strength and their friendship.
They had firsthand Cold War experience flying warplanes and training for battle. Late one night, during the usual rounds of vodka toasts, I asked them what they did in the military during the Cold War.
One of the men told his story of being assigned to a nuclear missile train that constantly traveled around Russia to avoid detection by the Americans. He was on the train car containing, as he called it, the”red button”, the device that when pushed would launch the missile. He spoke of the eagerness, the readiness of his comrades to engage the enemy. As he spoke excitedly about training for the mission, the actual launch of his nuclear missiles, he stopped in mid-sentence. Looking at me, he suddenly realized that I was his intended target. I would have been killed by the missiles he was preparing to launch.
The room went sober and silent as each man thought about the moment. After a few quiet breaths, he came over to me pulling me up into his arms saying in English…

“Never again.

(from BBC) ‘Global weight gain more damaging than rising numbers’

AN EXCERPT:    Researchers say that increasing levels of fatness around the world could have the same impact on global resources as an extra billion people.  The team estimated the total weight of people on the planet and found that North America had the highest average.  Although only 6% of the global population live there, it is responsible for more than a third of the obesity.

(from forbes) RATING VENTURE CAPITALISTS: How Does Romney/Bain rate against Bonderman/TPG?

The Founding Fathers Of Private Equity: How Mitt Romney Stacks Up

AN EXCERPT:  GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney launched private equity shop Bain Capital in 1984, under mandate from Bain & Company founder Bill Bain. Fifteen years later, Romney retired from the firm he founded, securing a generous compensation package that granted him a share of Bain profits for a decade and the right to invest alongside his former partners. With a net worth of $230 million, there is no denying that Romney’s successful career in, and retirement from, private equity was lucrative. But when examined in the context of his industry peers, Romney’s fortune seems almost modest….With $60 billion under management and more than a quarter century of delivering superior returns under its belt, Bain Capital ranks squarely amongst private equity’s elite outfits, competing for investors and deals with firms like TPG Capital, KKR & Co., and the Carlyle Group. Behind these Bain rivals are the titans of the buyout industry, men with names like Bonderman, Kravis and Rubenstein, billionaires all. In fact, six of the seven independent American private equity firms in the top ten of Private Equity International’s PEI 50 list can boast billionaire founders. The lone exception is Bain Capital.

ZEPHYR COMMENT:  And yet Mr. Bonderman gets a pass from mainstream environmentalists  because he contributes significant amounts of money to their organizations…is that all it takes to be a ‘good’ venture capitalist and avoid scrutiny from the ‘green’ media?…JS

(from msnbc) ‘At National Parks, where are all the young people?’

AN EXCERPT:   At Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, rangers are seeing more than green this spring. They’re also noticing a little more gray.  The average visitor to national parks is getting older.  Cyclist John O’Malley, 61, of Summit County, Colo., has enjoyed the trails for almost half a century.

“You do get close to nature,” Malley said.

But apparently, not everyone shares that fondness anymore…Back in 1996, at Death Valley National Park, almost a third of visitors were in their 20s. But in the last few years, that number has dropped to just 11 percent at Yosemite and six percent at Yellowstone, according to a University of Idaho analysis of Park Service attendance figures.

(from msnbc.com) ‘Cancer cases to surge 75 percent worldwide by 2030’

‘The American Way….what could possibly be wrong with that?”

AN EXCERPT:  The number of people with cancer is set to surge by more than 75 percent across the world by 2030, with particularly sharp rises in poor countries as they adopt unhealthy “Westernized” lifestyles, a study said on Friday….Many developing countries were expected to see a rise in living standards in coming decades, said the paper from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France.

But those advances could come at a cost — an increase in cases of cancers linked to poor diet, lack of exercise and other bad habits associated with affluence and linked to diseases like breast, prostate and colorectal cancers, it added.
